Academic Support

At West Moors Middle School we believe that every child has the right to access the curriculum through effective differentiation, ensuring that all children are the best that they can be. We are also aware that, for some children, this may mean that they have in class support or specialist equipment. When assessing individual needs we believe that it is essential to liaise with the parents/ carers, children and the teachers to ensure that we are supporting them to work as independently as possible and thereby build on their sense of achievement and self-esteem.

Our teaching team will use a range of strategies and monitor the progress of students carefully to identify any further provision or support that may be required. This will be reviewed and discussed with parents at regular intervals throughout the Academic Year. Our staff have been in regular contact with staff from our feeder schools to be as informed as possible regarding the needs of our new students. Mrs Tai, the SENCo, will be contacting all parents over the next few weeks to introduce herself and to discuss any concerns relating to transition that students and parents may have.

We understand that changing schools, especially in the current situation, will be quite distressing for some children who may be feeling very nervous and anxious. This is why we have created a booklet with the key information for our new pupils and their families. The booklet will allow children to familiarise themselves with the school if they have not already visited and to know who the key staff are that they can come and speak to if they would like to talk to someone.

Pond Area

Excitedly, we have regenerated our pond area, clearing extensive brambles to enable our children to have access to nature and pond life. On our newly fitted, decking platform our children have already spotted tadpoles and pond skaters! It’s amazing to be able to offer a hands on approach when studying key curriculum areas such as Science and Topic, enabling them all to have an opportunity to observe nature as it unfolds each season.

Gardening and Polytunnel Development

We are very excited to announce that our polytunnel and a series of raised flower beds were officially opened. This incredible gardening project was only possible due to the kindness and generosity of The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) and The Ferndown and Parley Rotary Club. Our children are now growing a range of fruit and vegetables which they will be able to enjoy at snack time. They will also be able to use produce grown to develop their own exciting recipes to make in Cookery lessons! This project underpins our wellbeing philosophy, enabling children to get pleasure and fulfilment outdoors to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Forest School Provision

Forest Schools is an evidence-based, child-centred, inspirational learning opportunity. At West Moors Middle School, it plays an integral part of our children’s learning across all year groups as develop their independence, self esteem and a positive attitude, exploring and experiencing the natural world for themselves. Our external Forest School trained teacher delivers weekly sessions in a dedicated wooded area on our school’s grounds and our children’s faces light up as they thrive during this outdoor learning opportunity!

Storm- our very special school dog

We strive to enhance health and wellbeing here in our school community. We would therefore like to introduce you to Storm, our very own school therapy dog. Research has down that pets can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness. Caring for Storm, we therefore help children at West Moors Middle School to grow up feeling secure and active. In this photo, Storm is wearing his very special school uniform made by Cassidy fits him like a treat!
